Scarborough and Northumberland

The last of our pre-booked and long hoped-for trips was a tale of two halves, the first in Scarborough meeting-up with friends we've not seen for well over two years.

We decided to make the most of the trip and do some touristing together visiting the Castle on top of the central hill:

We also visited the ruins of Whitby Cathedral:

A stunning ruin in a pretty spectacular location:

We weren't however prepared for the crowds in the town itself and beat a hasty retreat exploring up-and-down the coast.   We had a fantastic time in Scarborough and it exceeded our expectations as a place to visit.

Having said goodbye to our friends we headed up the coast into Northumberland and stopped at Alnmouth.   The weather had turned and the beach gave us an opportunity to take in the moody skies:

We decided to visit Lindisfarne/Holy Isle having alsways wanted to do so.   We walked out on the causeway as the tide receded, mooched around, again it was very busy and i have to be honest a little disappointing, then decided to take the 'fun' 4km walk back following a helpful line of poles across the seabed:

The low-lying water, cloudy skies and lack of wind made it an interesting walk, not sure if i prefer the colour version:

Or the black and white rendering:

We enjoyed the first half of the trip more than the second, company and the weather saw to that.  Alnmouth which we'd seen from the train was as attractive as we'd hoped, it's been nice to get out and about while conditions allow, hopefully that continues....
