Avis Dam

Having established with our guide that birding is best done first thing in the morning we had agreed to meet-up before dawn and then to head to our first birding location, Avis Dam, which is in the city of Windhoek.

By the time we arrived the first light of morning was illuminating the reservoir:

Helen took a snap of Gys and I working out the IDs of some of the birds across the water (there weren't many on it!):

We did see a good number of birds as we walked around, including Swallow-tailed Bee-eater:

A juvenile Rock Kestrel:

Was on this rock:

Pin-tailed Wydah:

and female, completely different looking birds

Mountain Wheatear:

Familiar Chat:

Common Waxbill:

Cape Bunting:

Once we'd finished birding the area we headed back to the guest-house for breakfast and then headed our to our next destination, Spreetshoogte.
